We spoke to two of our befrienders to hear why they joined our befriending scheme and why they would encourage others to do the same.
Clare
Why did you become a befriender?
“I know that going through cancer treatment, or supporting someone you love through cancer treatment, can be really tough. I liked the idea of being someone’s remote supporter; a safe space where they can honestly explore their feelings without having to put on a brave face”
“I became a befriender as I wanted to “give something back” and be able to make a difference to someone. I don’t feel as if I do much but that once a week phone call is so very important to my client (she told me this) I would recommend this volunteering role to anyone looking to find something that is both humbling and rewarding.”
Why would you recommend it to others?
“Because we can’t change the cancer diagnosis but we can help someone cope with their emotions during the rollercoaster of treatment.”
What do you get out of it?
“Knowing that I am helping someone through a difficult time.

“TCS is a bustling energetic wee charity wonderfully run by a dedicated team, and I feel cherished and happy to be one of the volunteers. Even in a small way, to be able to give my time to help someone with cancer and in pain and stress, seemed almost a privilege….. and it is….. just that.”
“It is not remotely altruistic. You meet lovely people. You get a wonderful feel good factor after a positive phone call or visit. You realise how very lucky you are to be hale and hearty.”
“It really is a satisfying way of using a little of your free time”
