We at Tayside Cancer Support think it’s important to hear from people within our charity to showcase all the hard work they do for us and how they have seen our charity help people.
Our focus for this blog is one of our befrienders Kevin Milne. Kevin has been a befriender at Tayside Cancer Support for coming up to two years.
Kevin shares how he found out about our charity, what made him want to be involved, why befriending in particular and his overall experience with TCS in the last two years.
“My initial lean into becoming a befriender around the summer of 2022 was based on my interaction across social media and in particular Linkedin.
I noticed an article from a well known legal firm in and around the Dundee & Angus area that had been involved in befriending at TCS for a good while now. I wanted to know more. I have wanted to give something back, based on my learnings from my father’s illness and when I read more on what TCS delivered and what it looked like, it looked like the right fit.
Here we are into Mar 23 and it has been what I thought it was and some more. I have always enjoyed listening and being an ear to those who need it. Advice, guidance, support or just someone to listen. That is what it is all about.
TCS are supportive in giving you the right tools and autonomy to explore the role and use your core skills to benefit the best from this incredible charity and service to the community. It gives me a sense of belonging and for me, it also helps me look and analyse my life and what others can bring to the table to assist me, how I am feeling which is all part of the programme and opportunity at TCS.
I enjoy the conversations with my clients and also that of the monthly meetings we have to discuss the month’s findings and help each other where we can, should we need it. TCS has been a great choice for me personally to give something back and in return give me something I was looking forward for, across the last few years.”
